The Canada Geese, Tundra Swans, Hawaiian Nene Geese, and Japanese Cranes are all original life-size bird carvings. The carvings are signed and numbered. The uniqueness of this series is that the body of the birds were carved from the falling wedges of Sequoia trees.

These Sequoia trees were planted in 1936 along the Blue Star Memorial Highway in memory of men lost in World War I. Fourteen of the Sequoia trees were cut in 1992 to widen the highway. The 60 years of age is showing in the growth lines of the wood in the bird’s bodies. From the branch, necks and heads of the 4 species of long necked birds were carved and matched with the bodies. The birds rest in a nest of recycled clematis and ivy vines taken off the Douglas Firs of Highway 43 that provided a structure for weaving the tule, cane, reed, rush, Water Iris and grasses.

Engraved on each bird’s base is the Artist’s Life Longhand Alphabet, "The Living Script". Eggs accompany each nest for family names and dates to be engraved.
